The Cobra Always Tweets On Friday

An Egyptian Cobra very much like the one who escaped from the Bronx Zoo.

This blog is a bit of a departure from what I usually do on here. But for today we’re gonna make the most of it. So anyway, here we go.

First, an update on my HCCC endeavors. I went to the open house up there last week and I got a bunch of information on what I need to do and I also finally signed up for placement testing. I officially have to go up there for testing on April 21 which is the last day I can go up for placement testing. Luckily, I was able to take a personal day off from work that day because I will probably be up there for about a few hours.  I know that because my brother took a similar test last year. And also, how would I be able to sleep enough to go to work that night if I didn’t take the personal day? But either way, I am good to go as far as that goes.

Now on to the cobra story. During the week, an Egyptian cobra escaped from its tank at the Bronx Zoo. Once that happened, the zoo closed down the Reptile House until the cobra could be recovered. After all, cobras are very dangerous animals. In reality, it was too cold for the snake to venture far but that didn’t stop someone from creating a Twitter account for the wayward snake. The Twitter feed was full of tweets that described the cobra as tweeting from an iPhone going on a sightseeing tour of New York City, including a trip via ferry to Ellis Island to see the Immigrant museum. It also had some snake-themed tweets that included a new twist on an iconic line from “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” You remember that scene where Indiana Jones says, “Snakes. Why does it have to be snakes?” Well the cobra’s take on that line: “Indiana Jones. Why does it have to be Indiana Jones?” I laughed so loud at that when I was reading that on my phone at work that I decided to retweet that to my followers.

In fact the feed proved to be so popular that the feed acquired over 222,000 followers. (It could be more by the time this goes up.) However, all good things must come to an end for the snake was finally recovered and put back in his tank as of Thursday night. Will the cobra continue her tweets? Well stay tuned.

The whole cobra thing reminded me of an incident that happened to me when I went to a Reptile museum in Catskill while I was growing up (it was about 1989 or 1990). I remember I was doing a project on snakes at the time and I was looking at a snake in a tank. And then all of a sudden, I hear this rattling noise. I wasn’t sure where it was coming from at first but then I looked up and I see this rattlesnake in the tank above the snake I was looking at all coiled up and rattling at me. Apparently it was pissed off at me because I was wearing a Batman hat with the giant Batman logo on it. After all, it was the year of Batman (thanks to the Tim Burton movie.) The snake must have thought that the bat was real. On the plus side though, I was never in any danger because the rattler was in his tank and those tanks were pretty secure. However, I do find it funny that a snake can get riled up by what a person wears. I wonder what he would think about my skull and crossbones hat.

And there you go. What better way to end this than with a little trip into Blackcatloner’s secret past.

‘Tis the Season

Well it’s that time of year again. Inches of snow falling on the ground, covering the roads and sidewalks so bad that people who use the sidewalks are forced to walk on the roads putting them at risk at either getting hit by a car or getting hit by a plow. Frigid winds blowing snow everywhere making visibility impossible. Temperatures hovering in the 20’s or lower degree range Fahrenheit. All this happened this past week, a clear sign that Old Man Winter has reared his ugly head at last.

This type of weather is one of the reasons why I hate living in New York and want to trade it in for warmer pastures, most notably California and Florida. Hell, I’d even trade it in for Australia because I hear summer is starting down there. Of course that is if I can afford to travel, which I can’t because the economy here in the States as everyone knows sucks.

But other than the awful winter weather we had this past week, things are good more or less. As expected, my 11-day stretch at work last week translated into a big paycheck which also included holiday pay. That is good, but still doesn’t change much. Still looking for a new job and still considering going to college because I need to try and advance my career on the Internet. I heard that HCCC has a really good broadcasting education program up there. I know people who are in the TV and radio industry who graduated from HCCC so that’s something I should definitely look into.

Anyway, today I am planning to do some Christmas shopping today, even though I already have finished Christmas shopping for my two nephews. Probably going to end up going to Wal-Mart today like I usually do. Hopefully it won’t be as crowded today as it was on Black Friday. Usually two weeks before Christmas is perhaps the best time to go shopping. Last minute shopping can be just as bad as it is on Black Friday.

And as far as my Christmas plans go, I do have some good news. In addition to not working on Christmas Eve because that is usually when Wal-Mart closes, I am also not working on Christmas being that it falls on a Friday, one of my normal days off from work. It is the first time since I started working at Wal-Mart in which I didn’t have to go into work and I am really excited about that. We were invited to go down to my brother’s house in Staatsburg for Christmas this year. Usually we have it at my house but this year is going to be different. Plus I haven’t been back to the ol’ Hudson Valley in over six years so it should be pretty good to see how things have changed since I moved off to Central New York.

Since Christmas and New Year’s usually fall on the same day of the week a week apart, there is also a good chance I will also be off on New Year’s Day (also a Friday this year.) However, I am trying to get a personal day off from work on New Year’s Eve primarily because I do not want to celebrate the start of 2010 at work. I do hope that I get it. Celebrating at work is clearly not the way to kick off the New Year, especially since I have such high hopes for this New Year.

Blackcatloner vs. the Westboro Baptist Church

In this video I decide to take a shot at the infamous Westboro Baptist Church because of their plans to picket in Australia because in their twisted belief the recent bushfires that swept through Victoria was “God’s punishment” on the country for supporting homosexuality. These people, including the Reverend Fred Phelps make me sick.
